Foundation for Africa

Kedves Club!

Ezúton szeretnénk meginvitálni Önt egy különleges utazásra.

Humanitárius turizmus programunk következő utunk célpontja és időpontja: Tanzánia, 2017. március 13.Az út részletes programját itt találhatja:

Az általunk kínált utazás EGZOTIKUS NYARALÁS A HUMANITÁRIUS MISSZIÓ ELEMEIVEL ÖTVÖZVE. A program különlegessége abban rejlik, hogy a pihenés, a mesebeli táj, és a különleges afrikai állatvilágmegismerése mellett, bepillantást nyerhetünk a helyi lakosok hétköznapjaiba is. Turistáink közvetlen kapcsolatba kerülhetnek az afrikai emberekkel, a résztvevők nem külső szemlélői lesznek a környezetnek, hanem aktív részesévé válnak az helyi kultúrának is (pl.: közös munka, főzés, foci meccs, ünnepeken, esküvőn, falu ünnepen való részvétel, stb.).

2017. HUMANITÁRIUS TURIZMUS – TANZÁNIA - PROGRAM

Az általunk kalauzolt vendégeknek alkalmuk nyílik az utazással töltött időből három-négy napot egy úgynevezett HUMANITÁRIUS, illetve fejlesztési MINI PROJEKT MEGVALÓSÍTÁSával tölteni (pl.: árvaház, iskola kifestése, építése, foglalkozások szervezése). Ezek a projektek általában valamely rászoruló, releváns intézmény, illetvenegyedben történnek, például árvaházban, iskolában történő látogatás során.

France Mutombo

Nkanga Nzumba Candy is an underprivileged congolese girl lives with crippled foots in a very poor family. We follows her life with special care. The reason she wrote for us was her fathers death and she requested help to finish her high school studies. You can read the mail in Hungarian here.

It is almost impossible for a disabled poor girl in Congo to build her independent life, but Candy doesn't give up. With the help of her sponsors and her hard willingness her life is shaping well. Last June she graduated succesfully at the College Othniel.

She shared with us her dreams in her mail. She wanted to continue her studies after the high school graduation. Now she takes part on a beauty course. The course covers  practical studies for cosmetician,hair-dresser and manicurist. After leaving the course she can work and have income.

To finish the course and for her transportation we would like to request donations for Candy. Regardless the amount all of your help would be highly appreciated!

A mozgássérült nagylány támogatókat keres

Nkanga Nzumba Candy halmozottan hátrányos helyzetű lány. Családja nagyon szegény, sok testvére van. Emellett mindkét lábára rokkant. Candynek lassan egy éve követjük kiemelt figyelemmel a sorsát. Elkezdte a szépségápoló tanfolyamot eddigi támogatóinknak köszönhetően, azonban további tanulmányai finanszírozásához segítséget kér. Támogasd a mozgássérült nagylány álmait!

A levelét magyar nyelven itt olvashatjátok.

Bármekkora összegű támogatást szívesen fogadunk, amelyet most, a mozgássérült nagylány tanulmányaira fordítunk!

Construction of our school

College Othniel was the first school where we introduced our student- and orphan support program. The building was small and in a terrible condition, and since more and more student wanted to visit our institution – over the years - we ran out of space. In 2002, we started our program with around 200 students and we proudly say that now approx. 750 children attend classes at College Othniel.

On 20th September 2005, with the presence of many of our supporters we held a ceremony in Kinshasa to announce the new building of the College Othniel. The first period of the construction ended in 2006, so the gates were already open for the school-year of 2006/07.

Currently, the building of the second block is in progress. Construction began in the end of 2013 and hopefully will be finished by May 2014. 8 classrooms are already fully prepared, and we expect that the other 3 will be ready by the deadline as well. Besides spaces for teaching, we also aim to build a roofed space for administrative tasks. At this moment, only the roof is missing.

This project is carried out with the co-funding of the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign affairs.

The students of the Othniel College have received the newly purchased benches which are financed from your donations. In addition with the 13th month grants, we could buy chairs and tables for the children. If they do not have to sit on the ground, it’s so much easier to concentrate on their studies.

We would like to thank you all for your donations on behalf of the children.

Don't forget: Helping is privilege!

Little recap of the last humanitarian tour:

Our humanitarian tourists arrived in Namanga, Tanzania on 18th October where our partner, the Maasai Foundation has an orphenage and a school, namely the Maasai Academy. After occuping their own room, they went to visit the orphan children, bringing, of course some presents: toys, shoes and clothes. They spent the next few days working: our tourists helped local people to  built new classrooms for the Maasai Academy. It was fun and also a hard working.

But the most amazing thing was the meeting with maasais, they could take part in a Mass, a religion ceremony.

Following this program they went to the Serengeti National Park to watch the african Big five animals. At the end of the tour they enjoyed the beach of Zanzibar.

Our most recent projects

Renewal of College Othniel

The construction of College Othniel’s second wing has officially begun in December 2013, with the co-financing of the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The project will results in  multi-functional rooms: 2 teaching / nursery rooms, one covered, open space, and a small administrative department (nurse's room + teacher’s room + office ). In addition, infrastructural developments will be implemented (power network development) in the existing and new buildings. Furthermore, new educational programs will be introduced so new rooms will fully be occupied.

Poultry farm for La Providence orphanage

One of the main long term goals of Foundation for Africa is to make the Othniel College and the La Providence Orphanage self-sustainable. This project would be the first small milestone on this long journey, making the orphanage less dependent on funds and creating an opportunity to make some profit on their own. Construction of a poultry farm with 20 layers, that can provide eggs as an additional protein source to the children’s daily menu and gives a sense responsibility to the orphans.

Ground Correction on the schoolyard of College Othniel

The Othniel College has been built on a slight slope with an angle pointing towards the gate of the school. In Congo, the rainy season brings regular heavy showers due to the tropical climate. The rainwater washes away the surface layer of the ground, creating channels and ditches. The result of this phenomena and the previous ground correction attempts, is an approximately 50 cm high uneven crack of the ground crossing and dividing the schoolyard into an upper and lower part. The yard has become insufficient for outdoor school events and ball games due to this problem. The erection of a wall crossing the yard to stop soil erosion and making ground surfaces even to create a schoolyard optimal for ball games and school events.

Our Volunteers

Five EVS volunteers serve on sight, each group for five months. They have introduced several new projects, such as a nursery for moringa trees (which are rich in antioxidants and can be used for healing) and a construction of a poultry farm (please see above). They hold classes on issues such as democracy, human rights, life skills, sport and English. Two of the volunteers work at La Providence orphanage as social workers and help the children and staff.

FOUNDATION FOR AFRICA

Our History

The Foundation of Africa is a non-profit organization established by civilians, registered firstly in Hungary, then in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The chairman of the Foundation, France Mutombo Tshimuanga from Congo, came to Hungary from the Democratic Republic of Congo in  February 1997 as a theological scholar. He graduated from Sola Scriptura Theological College. Winter of 1999 the American non-profit organization Step to Life sent a humanitarian mission to Congo. They asked him to be their helper in their half month-length charity work according to his knowledge of local circumstances and his personal contacts. His experiences in this work, indescribable poverty and needs in any area of the life made him to help his native land, Africa. The Foundation deals with educational, social and medical issues in Africa, while in Hungary it organizes cultural and public awareness-raising programs, presentations.

Our Activities in Africa

Student Aid Program – Othniel Elementary and Secondary School

Foundation for Africa maintains the Othniel Elementary and Secondary School in the capital of Congo, Kinshasa, accommodating 1600 students. One of the bigest problems in Africa is that the state doesn’t support the educational institutes. The situation is the same in Congo. For this reason only 4 of 10 children of school age can go to school. We believe that ensuring of education on adequate level is the most elemental need to be fulfilled for the growing up generation. The Foundation for Africa worked out a student aid program based on personal contact. It provides opportunity to assume the costs of the students in the Othniel Elementary and Secondary School. It means 20 USD per child per month plus a „thirteenth-month” payment to be spent on infrastructuraldevelopment. The children can be chosen on their own hand filled questionnaire and their photos, by email or personally. We regularily send to the supporters their patronized child’s school achievement, occasionally letter or small gifts, and a newsletter on the Foundations activities. You can keep in touch with the patronized child by mail. Since advertising of student aid program the school develop and increase permanently. In the course of a mission in the autumn of 2005 we put the foundation-stone of the first Congolese-Hungarian school; our new schoolbuilding. Since september 2006, opening of the first bloc of the building, the work is in progress, we hope we will soon be able to end succesfully the second and third blocs.

Orphan Aid Program – Caro Orphanage

The orphanage is also in Kinshasa, not far from the school. The orphanage cares for 24 children. You can contribute to their everyday costs by the same method as in case of the student aid program. You can choose the orphans as the students from the photo-base and can keep in touch with them regularily by mail. The orphan aid is 45 USD monthly, covering the basic needs of the everyday life. Thanks for any support for the orphanage.

Visiting Missions to Congo

The staff of the Foundation for Africa makes visit occasionally in Congo to control personally the operation of the institutes and the work of Congolese representation. Aim of travel in 2002 was to choose supported institutes, to declare mission of the organization and get information. In the course of travel in 2004 the organization had been registered in Congo and opened representation office in Kinshasa. The staff gave educational lecture in the Otniel Elementary and Secondary School; they took photos of the students and orphans and brought from all of them their own hand filled questionnaire as database of the student aid program. In the course of the journey they distributed gifts and clothes offered by Hungarian supporters, articles for personal use, kitchen equipment and beds for the orphanage; organized Foundation-Days in villages of the Kinshasa area with free medical surgery and basic agricultural courses; distribution of medicines of great quantity with the assistance of UN; establishing school library have also been realised. At the 2005 and 2006 mission trips we were focusing on preparation and our school-building project.

School-Building Project

In the Othniel Elementary and Secondary School which has been supported by the Foundation for Africa since 2002 the number of the students grow from 200 to close to 1200 (from 1200 the foundation support around 500 students), for this much student the building of the school became small. So thus the idea was born to create a new school-building, not far away from the present educational institute, which will be able to provide better circumstances for studying. During our mission in 2005 on the 20th of September we put the foundation-stone of the new school with all due ceremony, building is still in progress. First block of the school was handed over on the 14th of September 2006. The day of the opening was successful from many respects: complacence that something was realized which will serve for charity; there is many people’s generosity in it ; we could rejoice at it together: people from the neighborhood, children, Hungarian, Congolese; many familiar faces were in the crowd, many appreciative glances at the building; we could realize our first major action, we could work together with the far-away Congo, we could start a serious development project that can be an example. Our new school is registered as an official partner of the state of Democratic Republic of Congo. We hope that we can finish building of the second and third blocks and carry on our work succesfully with other infrastructural development projects. We plan to continue with infrastructural developement projects in our other institutions : clinic, orphanage, smaller village schools. For the supported schools in Matonge, Kimpoko, Ngamanzo villages we also plan to help through projects for waterpumps and children transport facilities.

Humanitarian Tourism program

Since 2004 we have organized two journeys per year, regularly joined by helpful European adventurers. Our tourist program combines the element of exotic vacation and humanitarian mission. In the course of the 15 days long journey in Africa the participants have possibility to get to know – thanks to the local experiences and contacts of the foundation – many fields of the African everyday life and tourist sights of the country which are not available for simple tourists. Besides, aim of the journey – as an odd opportunity – is realization of a humanitarian mini-project in team-work.

Our Activities in Hungary
Screenings, Educational Presentations, Programs on Tolerance,
Exhibitions

In hungarian cities we organize presentations in the field of education and tolerance illustrated by videos and photos on the african life and our work in Congo. We also present exhibitions of photos, child-drawings and traditional handworks. The lectures are presented by the chairman of the foundation, France Mutombo in Hungarian, French or English. He gives lectures in schools, libraries, community centers and on the occasion of cultural programs and festivals. Please, contact us if you know people or institutions who would be interested in our presentations.
